When President Donald Trump claimed that his tariff policy made the U.S a rich and respected country, “We are now the Richest, Most Respected Country in the World,” he was indeed concealing a purpose behind such a tariff and planning for the U.S to take a different route. It appeared to most American voters that “ Make America Great Again” was Trump’s goal, but such greatness became a delusion.
President Trump claimed that from the tariff revenues the U.S can pay the debt down, which is according to World Debt Clock, the U.S has the highest debt of over $39 trillion in the world. The President has also said that from the tariff revenues he will pay $2000 to each American.
The U.S perhaps is the richest nation in the world but Americans are still under economic pressure with no signs for relief. The political propaganda of the candidates during each election season carries the same messages to the American people, which are promises for a better economy, jobs, healthcare, and etc. But as soon as the elections are over, the Americans return to the same rough reality.
However, instead of paying $2000 to each American, the President took billions of dollars from the taxpayers to pay for the war expenses, which resulted in worsening the lives of many hard working Americans. The U.S government has lost its credibility among the American people, as according to Marquette Law School Poll national survey, 63% of Americans do not trust the government all the time. And according to Gallup, 52% of Americans have a minuscule amount of confidence in Congress.
President Trump took a different direction and changed his priority to focus on international issues and spending American dollars on many foreign projects that mostly bring revenues for the American elite. In many aspects, the Americans are still struggling economically with the high prices of necessities.
Furthermore, every political conflict and the issues that are created by the politicians also affect American children. The affordability of Children’s healthcare has always been an issue in the U.S., as the lawmakers have never agreed on one permanent solution for Medicaid and other benefits that should be provided to children.
According to Georgetown University, McCourt School of Public Policy, 2 million fewer children were enrolled in Medicaid and Children’s Healthcare Program (CHIP) in 2026 compared to 2025 when Trump entered the White House and became President. However, understating the importance of children’s healthcare and providing Medicaid to every child in the nation should become the priority of both the Democrats and the Republicans.
Obviously, the average American people have not experienced a positive economic change over all as they either miscalculated Trump’s economic policy or deceived by his rhetoric to boost the American economy. Trump’s economic policy, including tax cuts, has largely benefitted the high-income earners. The major tax legislations, the Signature Tax bill, which was signed in 2017, and One Big Beautiful Bill signed in 2025 were wide paths for the rich Americans with large assets and stock holdings.
“These are both terrible policy and politics,” said Len Burman, co-founder of the nonpartisan, D.C.-based Tax Policy Center and a professor at Syracuse University.
Now, as the years are passing by and the Americans are struggling, the question is: How long do they have to be patient before the burden on their shoulders eases?
