Three Roanoke City Public School students recently accompanied Roanoke City Councilwoman Anita Price to Washington, DC to attend the annual National League of Cities Congressional City Conference.
Kenai Hunt of William Fleming High School, Harley Garcia of Patrick Henry High School and Kameron Washington-Brown of Lucy Addison Middle School proudly represented the Star City as they met over 200 youth delegates from across the nation.
During the conference, the students, who are also members of the City of Roanoke Youth Services Citizen Board, participated in a mock presidential convention and developed their own policy priorities. The policy statements were determined by youth specific issues and written by the impressive student delegates who demonstrated they are engaged in civic leadership. The top five policy topics that emerged were: Environmental sustainability, Sex education in public high schools, Small businesses, Preventive measures for stopping the incarceration cycle, and immigration. The youth delegations were then instructed to choose one policy from the platform to work on in their city. Our delegation will meet with the Youth Services Citizen Board to make this determination.
The young ladies also had the opportunity to tour several historic landmarks of our Nation’s Capitol including the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument and the Martin Luther King Memorial.
