Blue Ridge PBS announces Appalachian artist, Willard Gayheart as its featured artist for Artistic Encounters – Meet the Artist.
The series highlights artists and invites the community to meet the individuals while seeing their works with an opportunity to acquire pieces during a reception and following exhibit held at Blue Ridge PBS. The art will remain on display for several weeks.
Willard Gayheart has dedicated his life to Appalachia. Growing up in the Cumberland Gap region of Kentucky and eventually settling down in the small town of Galax, Virginia, Willard has found artistic ways to keep the rich legacy of this region alive. He’s perhaps best known for his pencil drawings depicting life in the region, publishing two books of art and running his own frame store near Galax.
Willard’s fascination with the old “mountain spirit” has also transpired in the music he frequently plays. He is an accomplished guitar player, singer, recording artist, and songwriter who has been playing bluegrass and folk music in bands and jam sessions for as long as he can remember.
Appalachian historian and musician, Ricky Cox will provide traditional mountain music along with Willard for this special event. Both reception and exhibit are completely free of charge. However, as a non-profit, donations are highly appreciated. Donation proceeds go to funding the local station operations and make it possible for Blue Ridge PBS to continue to provide the community with entertaining, educational, and inspirational content.
Blue Ridge PBS is located behind Virginia Western Community College at the end of McNeil Dr.
The reception will take place Thursday, April 24 from 4:00 – 7:00 pm and the pieces will remain on display weekdays, April 28 – May 9 from 1-4 pm and by appointment. Visit BlueRidgePBS.org for details.
