Mrs. Dorsey’s Closet has been deeply rooted in the Roanoke Valley since its founding in 1983. That year, after realizing a growing need for quality clothing for families facing hardships, Joan Dorsey established the business.
Initially in the basement of First United Methodist Church, the organization has grown through various partnerships and locations over the years. The overall mission has never wavered, though – to honor Joan’s legacy by meeting the basic needs and serving the community with compassion.
For the better part of four decades, people like Jennifer Johnson have benefitted from the nonprofit organization. “The first time that I visited the store, I was just blown away. A variety of unique and quality items were offered, from suits to shoes,” she said. “I remember going home and telling my friends and family about it.”
Last year, Mrs. Dorsey’s Closet experienced approximately 3,400 total guest visits. The average income of individuals who walked through the doors was below $25k.
For any organization to sustain success, effective individuals must be in leadership roles.
As the store’s operations coordinator, Edie Saunders oversees the daily tasks of the clothing ministry, coordinating volunteers, managing donations, and helping maintain a welcoming and organized environment for guests.
Focusing on building community partnerships is another responsibility of hers.
“Each month, we serve households, including those experiencing homelessness, living on fixed incomes, single parents, immigrants, and others facing challenges,” she added, “Our program is staffed by a team of 40 compassionate, caring volunteers who give their time to serve the community. Guided by the call to ‘Love Your Neighbor as Yourself,’ our ministry offers dignity, compassion, and hope to a diverse community.”
When Saunders joined the Salem Area Ecumenical Ministries team, Board of Directors Carey Harveycutter wrote, “Edie’s leadership and enthusiasm will strengthen our ability to serve those in need, and this new facility will allow us to expand our mission in ways that truly make a difference for our community.”
