The Roanoke Branch NAACP is proud to announce four area youth who will represent the Branch at the National ACT-SO Competition in San Antonio, Texas July 12-15, 2018. The local competition was held at William Fleming High School where participating youth displayed excitement and confidence.
The four gold medal winners and their respective categories are: Cevonte’ Burwell- returning winner in Visual Arts-Drawing; Leila Bryant-returning winner in Performing Arts-Vocal Contemporary; Tiana Horace–STEM-Chemistry, Bio-Chemistry; and Tynajia Smith-Performing Arts- Poetry Performance.
Other medal winners are: Silver medalists – Kazmere Ramey, Poetry performance; London Paige-STEM-Chemistry/Bio-Chemistry and Kieyshaun Scott – Performing Arts-Contemporary Dance; Kazmere Ramey-Poetry Written.
Bronze medal winners: Kamani Board- Performing Arts-Instrumental; Leila Bryant, Humanities- Original Essay and for Performing Arts-Vocal Classical and Tramelle Lee – Performing Arts-Dance; Duy Pham-Performing Arts- Vocal Contemporary and Tynajia Smith-Humanities- Poetry Written.
The Olympians were able to compete in up to 3 categories with some competing in two and three categories.
Preparations are in progress to take the gold medalists to San Antonio, Texas! To help take these youth to the competition, the annual “Jazz on the Lawn” fundraiser is set for Sunday, June 24, on the beautiful lawn of Clint Barlow on Cove Road. Other donations are also being accepted to help with this effort!
