Mayor Sherman Lea, Sr. and members of the Roanoke City Council congratulated two local young ladies who have made outstanding accomplishments, at the City Council meeting on Monday, Sept. 16.
London Paige was recognized for winning a National Bronze medal at the 2019 National NAACP ACT-SO Competition in Detroit, Michigan in July. She competed in the STEM Chemistry/Biochemistry category with a project entitled, “The Effects of Yeast on the Decomposition of a Starch Based and an Algae Based Bioplastic.”
As a highly motivated young lady, London is a Junior at William Fleming High School and the Roanoke Valley Governors School for Math and Science. The ACT-SO Committee is so proud of her accomplishment making her the 4th National ACT-SO winner for the Roanoke Branch.
London is a also leader at William Fleming HS and in the community serving as the WFHS Junior Class President; Second Vice President of the Roanoke NAACP Youth Council; Secretary of the Jack and Jill’s Club; as well as, member of the National Honor Society and the WFHS “Be That Girl” program.
London’s parents-Holly and Daniel Day, her grandparents along with Brenda Hale, president of the Branch and the ACT-SO Committee members were there to support London and were allowed to make comments.
Also recognized was Haley Day for earning the title of Roanoke Valley Outstanding Teen. She is the daughter of Charlene Day and grandchild of Hilda and the late Charles Day.
Haley is a freshman at William Byrd HS and the Roanoke Valley Governor’s School. She is a cheerleader and very involved in the Miss Virginia Pageant program.
Both girls had the opportunity to express themselves and even take a picture with RVGS teacher, Don Wages, who also served as London’s mentor for the ACT-SO Competition.
These ladies will continue to do great things n the future.
