When the Kirk Family YMCA opened in downtown Roanoke in 2004, the $7 million facility investment was expected to breathe new life into the former Jefferson High School gymnasium.
Since opening its doors 22 years ago, the organization has accomplished several milestones, including the celebration of the YMCA’s 175th year in America, the designation of its lap pool lanes in honor of beloved resident Keith Gaines and the expansion of the Jefferson High annex building, among others.
“With our focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y nurtures the potential of every youth and teen, improves the nation’s health and well-being, and provides opportunities to give back and support neighbors,” its website states. “We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve.”
The Kirk Family YMCA has recently made a potentially game-changing move.
The first full-day early learning option of its kind at the facility, the Y will soon be launching a new preschool program. Created to assist three-year-olds build foundational skills prior to entering kindergarten, Aug. 11 is expected to be the opening date.
Program organizers say that in addition to focusing on social-emotional development, the same will be done for kindergarten readiness and hands-on learning in a classroom. To better support children’s developmental needs, staff will also prioritize building community partnerships.
Nicole Immoos will lead the center by overseeing program coordination and classroom instruction.
“The Y has been listening and responding to our communities’ most critical social needs for years,” a statement read. “Whether developing skills or emotional well-being through education and training, the Y fosters the care and respect all people need and deserve.”
It should come as no surprise that many parents have expressed interest in the program initiative. Journee Smith, a parent to two little girls, plans on signing her children up.
“An organization wanting to make life easier for parents is one thing. Doing the necessary hard work behind the scenes to make it happen is another,” she said. “I am elated that the YMCA is doing this. What an amazing opportunity this could be for the community.”
Tuition for YMCA members and non-members is expected to be $190 and $210 per week, respectively. Department of Social Services payments and other financial assistance for qualifying families will be accepted.
