“Welcome to Market on Melrose” says Teirra Robinson with a greeting that extends through a warm inviting smile that makes you feel like you’re in the right place. Although she’s only been on the job for several months, Tierra brings the natural excitement she feels about life itself to her position as one of several cashiers at the market in Melrose Plaza.
Tierra is not alone in her excitement, especially on this particular day that marks the first year anniversary of Market on Melrose (MOM).
The market opened to much fanfare last year two weeks before Thanksgiving on November 13. It was a day that many in this northwest community truly felt the promise of great change that signalled a new way of life for a community in need.
You can see and feel the pride in Amanda Napier’s stride. As the director of business services at MOM her clear sense of mission is quite evident as she strolls about the market overseeing every aspect of each engaging activity at the store.
“We’ve come a long way in our mission to help this community that has actually been very supportive through our first year,” said Napier. “As we support the community, they support us and we plan to continue this chain of support.”
Napier went on to express her approval of how well operations have been progressing particularly the successful day to day flow at Henrietta’s Cafe that has also done considerably well with catering for different functions.
Word has spread that MOM has some of the best fried chicken around which is one of the reasons the cafe frequently experiences long lines. Nathaniel Haley, a regular customer, said he’s particularly fond of the sweet potato casserole frequently offered at the cafe.
“I’ve been coming to the market since day 1,” said Haley, who also spoke about the freshness of the fruits and vegetables and the great price on meats. “I’ve been known to come in here several times in one week and sometimes because I live near the market I might drop in a couple of times within the same day. They need to name an aisle after me,” he said in jest.
Quan Saunders, who has been general store manager at the market since it opened said “We didn’t know quite what to expect, but we’ve had a pretty successful first year and I truly feel it as a proud accomplishment.”
As a full-service grocery store the market provides access to local fresh, affordable and nutritious fruits, vegetables and much more – a condition that totally dispels any hint of the area’s previous designation as a food desert. The market was the first phase of the $35 million Melrose Plaza that officially opened July 31 and stands as one of the most historically vibrant and expansive developments ever to come to this northwest community.
“Entering the store has a feel like none other for me and I’m sure others feel the same way in this community,” said Oscar Johnson who said he’s “never eaten so many fruits and vegetables in his life since the market opened.” Johnson continued to reflect on how the convenience of the store being right in the neighborhood has changed his life in a great way.
Debra Pannell, an administrative assistant at Goodwill is another overjoyed customer who said “MOM is more than just a store to me, it’s a feeling like home. I love popping in there to see what’s new and exciting but what really sets MOM apart is the people. The staff are always so friendly and welcoming and they have a real passion for what they do. The “Market” is a truly special place, and I feel so lucky to be a part of it.”
In addition to the market, Melrose Plaza houses the Excel Center (adult education), Wellness Center, Bank of Botetourt branch, and the newly relocated Harrison Museum of African American Culture – all completing this hub of human advancement presently situated conveniently under the same roof with the Melrose Branch Library.
“It’s so awesome to be celebrating the first anniversary of the Market on Melrose! This dream deferred is alive and well,” said Donna Davis, director, community engagement for Melrose Plaza. “I’m so proud of the way the Market staff meets daily challenges and continues to offer excellent customer service.
