There is something pretty awesome about colleagues competing against each other in a charity fundraiser that directly impacts the community they serve.
The Roanoke Rampage, a charity football team composed of local police officers and firefighters, competes in the National Public Safety Football League. Money raised over the years has been donated to various charities, including St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Chris’s Coffee and Custard and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
Xavier Drakeford, the recently appointed head coach, views this role as an opportunity to combine his love for athletics and make a real difference.
“I am excited to be the new head coach of this incredible team. This group represents service members from police and fire departments across our region — those who protect and serve every day and then choose to put on the pads and compete at a high level,” he said. “That means something. That carries weight, and I’m honored to lead.”
Continuing, he added, “My dad, Anthony, previously played for the Roanoke Rampage. I was able to be around some great Rampage teams. My sister, Simran, is with the Roanoke City Police Department, and I’m beyond proud of her and her accomplishments.”
The size and scope of the Roanoke Rampage continue to grow. A fun-filled event for all ages, spectators show up every year in full force, rooting on the local heroes. Members of the winning team often take to social media to gloat.
When Taylor Scott heard that Drakeford was named the head coach, he reached out to some friends to share the news. “Does it get much better than serving the community while competing against your friends? First Responders save countless lives every year in the Roanoke Valley,” he said. “While it doesn’t solve every problem, this organization does tremendous work.”
Members of Roanoke Rampage take their motto seriously – “We train hard, play harder, and represent the courage and commitment of those who protect and serve. Whether on the field or in the line of duty, we bring the same grit, discipline, and heart.”
As of press time, there are four scheduled events for 2026: Rampage Season Kickoff Charity Game, Community Heroes Recognition Night, Annual Fundraiser Match and Holiday Toy Drive Game.
“I look forward to meeting everyone, shaking their hand, learning their story, and building a championship team,” Drakeford said. “This is more than football – it’s family, it’s pride, and it’s purpose.”
