Many service clubs are gender specific and do not provide opportunities for couples to serve together. That is not the case with Lions Clubs. Women were welcomed into Lions Clubs in 1987. The Roanoke Valley Breakfast Lions Club with its unique history of inclusion embraced women members wholeheartedly and now its membership of 54 is 50 percent female. The inclusion of women provided the opportunity for couples to serve together which is also something that is encouraged by offering couples a reduced membership fee.
The Roanoke Valley Breakfast Lions Club has seven couples; four are pictured. Couples are some of the club’s most active members. Volunteering together provides another opportunity for productive quality time. Couples volunteer together in a number of our service projects of which the most popular is delivering Meals on Wheels. Couples not included in the picture who are faithful volunteers with the Meals on Wheels program are Cliff and Mary DeMars and Ernie and Mary Jo Hubble. Carroll and Freda Carter, another couple, have different service interests but enjoy the opportunity to fellowship together at our various social outings.
Please contact Lion JJ Johnson (540-597-4253) if you are interested in becoming a member of the Roanoke Valley Breakfast Lions Club.
