Roanoke City’s community spirit and weather was bright last Saturday at the Annual Melrose Plaza Spring Fun Day & Job Fair.

Sponsored by Goodwill of the Valleys, Kiwanis Club of Roanoke and Shiloh Baptist Church Men’s Ministry, the nearly five-hour event attracted hundreds throughout the Roanoke Valley and beyond.

The program featured a dynamic slate of vendors, children’s activities and public programs that highlighted reflection and community.

Organizations from public, private and nonprofit services were present to answer questions and provide resources. They include Bank of Botetourt, Brain Injury Solutions, Feeding Southwest Virginia, New Horizons Healthcare, Roanoke Sheriff’s Office and other city departments.

Attendees looking for employment were encouraged to bring their resumes. As Brittany Giles was recently laid off, she says the job fair was perfect timing. “For me, it was deeply satisfying to hear about all the part-time and full-time opportunities. Every employer that I spoke with could not have been more professional. I should have a part-time gig soon,” she said.

Ray Thompson says he has never missed a Melrose Plaza Spring Fun Day. When asked how this one compares to others, he replied, “The essence of Roanoke has always been its people. Creativity and community investments build lasting legacies. Because of the program lineup and overall turnout, last Saturday was my favorite one.”

There were plenty of family-friendly activities. A massive crowd formed to see the William Fleming Marching Band perform before the Colonel cheerleaders kept the energy going with their choreographed performances.

“It’s been said that a community is at its best when it moves from a passive space to an inclusive one where all factions support each other. Unlike many places that I’ve lived, there is a deep sense of belonging here in the Star City,” Cassie Parker said. “When Roanoke shows up in full force, it is something special to behold. I hope this event continues in the future.”

Added Kapri Jones, “It warmed my heart to see so many people. Regardless of age, there was something for everyone. My favorite part was the impromptu dance competitions that happened amongst my friends and family members.”

All were invited to the day of encouragement and community togetherness. Closing remarks were provided by Nicole Ross and others.

For anyone wondering what Roanoke is capable of, they need to look no further than May 30. Experiences like this annual gathering create a unique bond between all parties involved.
