Dr. Beth A. Brown was one of eight honorees at the 2015 Strong Men and Women in Virginia History Awards program held recently in Richmond, VA. Dr. Brown died in October, 2008. Her award was accepted posthumously by her mother, Ms. Frances Brown.
The event, sponsored by Dominion Resources and The Library of Virginia, highlighted and honored eight native Virginians who have previously or continue to contribute to Black History in Virginia and around the world.
Ms. Brown, founder and president of the Dr. Beth A. Brown Science Foundation, was escorted by former Astronaut Leland Melvin, who was a co-worker of Beth’s at NASA where she was employed at the time of her death.
The honorees and their representatives met with Governor Terry McAuliffe, prior to a reception and an exciting program.
In addition to the award presented to Ms. Brown, she received a gift bag from the Dominion Resources and was surprised with a special gift from former Roanoker, Dr. Florence Farley (a former Mayor of Petersburg, VA). Her gift was a one-of-a-kind cross-stitching of a Mother and Child stitched by Dr. Farley who is a well known and highly acclaimed creator of artistic cross-stitching.
The Dr. Beth A. Brown Science Foundation will receive a check for $5,000 from Dominion Resources and The Library of Virginia.
