Summer is now officially here. Many young students are home and their appetites came with them. This can present a challenge for parents on a tight budget. The Pulaski County School System is offering food items at designated locations throughout the summer that should be very beneficial and hopefully provide some support.
The T.G. Howard Community Center Inc. (TGHCC) located in Pulaski has also established a program under Chef Charity that serves senior citizens once a month throughout the summer. Thanks to some additional resources, an additional program will be able to serve single parents or financially challenged households with students during the School Summer Break.
The Alberta Lee Safewright Summer Student Food initiative will begin the second week in June.
“This program has a special significance to me, I remember being a young parent and raising three children. There were some difficult times and the kindness of other meant the world to my family. I had opportunity to witness this type of kindness growing up as well,” Anna Marie Safewright stated.
“Alberta, my mother, would often take food to families in need after church service. There were times she served food right out of her own kitchen. My mother believed in being a servant to others and she instilled this in me as well. I left this for several years and came back when her health declined. My mother passed away but her legacy of generosity towards others continued in my family. I have been blessed to serve other families for several years on my own, and now I’m looking forward to collaborating with the T.G. Howard Community Center Inc.,” said Anna, a volunteer at TGHCC.
Churches, individuals, and organizations will be contacted to identify families who may be in need. Referrals for families can also be received by submission to the T.G. Howard Community Center email [email protected] or phone number, 540-440-1976. Supplies are limited, and will be given out to residents of the New River Valley only.
