Who is Althea Dent, and how would you describe yourself to someone who has never met you?
I love to have conversations about ideas, values and experiences. Since I’ve moved to Roanoke, I have been described by several as “direct.“ I think that’s because I’m pretty logical and objective. I tend to express my thoughts clearly and succinctly. I enjoy encouraging people, asking thoughtful questions and having conversations that leave people feeling a little more hopeful than when we started.
Where were you born and raised? What was your upbringing like?
I was born and grew up in Chicago, IL. I’ve lived in various parts of the Chicago area. My parents came to Chicago during the Great Migration. Even though they were both orphans, they gave my sister and me a loving, stable, family, enabling both of us to become first-generation college graduates.
My parents raised us to have faith in God but also be kind and helpful to others, too. I’ve always appreciated growing up in a city where diversity wasn’t something you learned about. It was simply everyday life. I’m so grateful I had that as a start because being comfortable with people who are different from me has shaped a lot about who I am.
After high school, what was the next chapter of your life?
I attended the University of Chicago and majored in Behavioral Science. One of the things I enjoyed most about studying there was the strong emphasis on teaching us how to think, communicate and develop our ideas. If one had a reasoned argument, it would be heard. I relished that learning environment. That way of thinking continues to influence how I work with counseling and coaching clients today.
What is your official title, and what do your responsibilities consist of?
My official title is Licensed Professional Counselor. I own Insights & Inspiration, LLC, my counseling practice, and Live Well Advising, LLC, my coaching practice. Whether I’m counseling or coaching, my work centers on helping people navigate life’s challenges, strengthen their relationships and make thoughtful decisions that move them toward healthier, more fulfilling lives
How important is family to you?
I love my family. When I raised my three children, I really focused on creating a community where we were interdependent and cared for one another intentionally. I have been blessed to have my family enlarged with two sons-in-law and two grandchildren. Beyond that, my faith has also given me a broader family through the body of Christ. Those relationships have enriched my life in meaningful ways.
If you were building the ultimate music playlist for a six-hour road trip, which artists would be on it?
I grew up with 80s music, so I am convinced that’s the best decade of music. I’m excited to see a younger generation discover the genius of Whitney Houston, Prince and Michael Jackson, whose talents were all unmatched. When I was growing up, I had a very eclectic set of music tastes: soft rock, Broadway, R&B, pop and musicals. A current artist near and dear to my heart is Dylan Dent. So, if you’re riding with me, expect everything from The Police to Broadway soundtracks, recent artists, and probably a few songs you weren’t expecting.
What are some of your favorite City of Roanoke memories?
I have always enjoyed the Taubman Sidewalk Art Show. It’s a yearly tradition that I look forward to. I love museums, especially art museums, but there’s something special about coming face-to-face with the artist, learning about their process and vision. It’s my pleasure to support local artists and small businesses.
Another favorite event is GoFest, which is basically an appreciation of the vast options of outdoor activities and the beauty of the Roanoke Valley. Local Colors Festival is another Roanoke tradition that celebrates diverse cultures and their heritage. I’ve appreciated watching Roanoke continue to grow while maintaining its sense of community.
What are some of your hobbies?
I have become a plant mom and a bit of a gardener. I’m especially interested in increasing the biodiversity in my yard. I’ve learned to cultivate native plants to bring pollinators and support our ecosystems. I love to read! I am a nerdy book lady, although I have learned to embrace both digital books and audiobooks. I am enjoying a resurgence of jigsaw puzzles, which I find calming. I also enjoy spending time with family and friends and discovering local restaurants. I’d describe myself as a low-key foodie.
Which people have had the biggest impact on your life outside of family?
I have been blessed to have many solid friends who have become like family. I’ve been fortunate to have several mentors and longtime friends who challenged me to think more deeply, encouraged me when I needed it most and modeled integrity in both their personal and professional lives. Their support and wisdom have had an incalculable impact on my life. I count my relationships with my friends and family as a source of wealth in my life.
If you could go back and give your younger self some advice, what would it be?
That it’s okay to be an outlier. When we’re growing up, so much of our time and focus centers on figuring out how we can fit in with the environment around us. I would say stay true to who you are. Over time, you’ll discover that the goal isn’t fitting in. It’s about finding the people who value you for exactly who you are.
