Who is Ashley Canty?
If I had to describe myself, I would say that I’m down to earth with a great sense of humor. I’m an extroverted introvert. I love to travel, but also enjoy being at home. I’m very spontaneous and wise beyond my years.
Where were you born and raised? What was your upbringing like?
I’m the oldest of three girls. I was raised in northwest Roanoke. Growing up, my parents had me involved in everything – sports, Girl Scouts, various camps, you name it. I had a strict upbringing, but I’m thankful for all the lessons they taught and instilled in me.
After high school, what was the next chapter of your life?
I did two years at Virginia Western Community College, but knew that I aligned more with the entrepreneurial lifestyle. I put to use my cosmetology license that I earned while in high school and worked as a hairstylist and barber for a few years.
What is your official title and what do your responsibilities consist of?
I’m a Roanoke Realtor and Moseley Certified Trainer. I help individuals buy and sell throughout southwest Virginia. I give buyers a seamless homebuying experience by saving money through my knowledge of local grants, among other things. I also educate aspiring realtors with the classes I teach in conjunction with Moseley Real Estate Schools.
How important is family to you?
Family is everything to me. My kids are my world! After losing my 12-year-old special needs daughter in April 2025, it reminded me that every second of life is to be lived and I strive to provide my son the same limitless life and memories.
If you were building the ultimate music playlist for a six-hour road trip, which artists would be on it?
My playlist would, of course, have Beyonce on it. Jay-Z, Meg the Stallion, Koryn Hawthorn and Tasha Cobbs would also be on it. You may even hear some Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston too.
How would you describe your relationship with the City of Roanoke?
My relationship with Roanoke is over three decades long. I have memories from every section of the city. It’s where I was raised and where I now raise my children. Roanoke will always have a place in my heart because for the majority of my life, the Star City is all I’ve known. I love the life that I have created here!!!!!!
Outside of your profession, what do your hobbies consist of?
When I’m not working, I like to travel, attend concerts and experience new restaurants. My newest hobby is pilates. Trust me, it’s a lot harder than it looks.
Which people have had the biggest impact on your life outside of your family?
Quiana Watson and Mia Ray, two amazing mentors. In many ways, they’ve shown me what faith and dedication can lead to, all while being my authentic self. Not watering myself down or lessening myself to other people’s ideas of who I should be.
If you could go back and give your younger self some advice, what would it be?
Get out of your head, so you can get out of your own way
Try therapy
Boundaries. Create and enforce them to protect your peace
All you need is a mustard seed of faith
LIVE, LAUGH, LOVE
