Who is Bryan Ashford?
I would describe myself as an outgoing Roanoke native who loves to make a real difference in the community that I grew up in.
Where were you born and raised? What was your upbringing like?
I was born and raised in the Star City. I had a good upbringing, courtesy of both my parents. Growing up, I was instilled with valuable life skills such as a work ethic and integrity.
After high school, what was the next chapter of your life?
Once I graduated from William Fleming High School, I attended Hampton University to further my education.
What is your official title, and what do your responsibilities consist of?
I’m a passionate teacher and basketball coach. This year marks my 12th in education and 13th coaching at the high school level. My responsibilities are varied: building bridges, developing genuine relationships with my students and players, creating a safe, supportive environment and setting high expectations while fostering accountability. I do everything in my power to help my students excel in both the classroom and the field of competition.
How important is family to you?
Family is everything to me! I love who I am, and I’m extremely proud of the roots that I come from.
If you were building the ultimate music playlist for a six-hour road trip, which artists would be on it?
Off the top of my head…J. Cole, Wiz Khalifa, Young Dolph, SZA, Don Toliver and Future
How would you describe your relationship with the City of Roanoke?
I have a love-hate relationship with my city. I love it here because it’s home. But I wish there were more positive things for people my age to do. Something that would encourage people to stay, or even come back.
Outside of your profession, what do your hobbies consist of?
I own a drone company, B’ N’ CTRL’, LLC., which I started a few years ago. Since then, I’ve been creating unique videos and clips of different events and occasions to share online.
Which people have had the biggest impact on your life outside of your family?
All of my personal coaches who guided and mentored me growing up. This includes Coach Champ and Ryan Hubbard, Coach Angie Terry and Coach Rick Ramey. This also includes the coaches that I currently work alongside: Coach Richard Wilson, Coach Marty Bishop, Coach Davell Hash, and Coach Djuan Hankins.
If you could go back and give your younger self some advice, what would it be?
1) Life is a marathon, not a sprint
2) Enjoy the process of the work you put in when aiming for your goals
3) Every failure is a lesson. Use it to transform your weaknesses into strengths.
