How would you describe yourself to someone who has never met you?
First and foremost, I’m a Christian. My faith is the foundation of who I am and guides how I serve others – whether in business, family or community. As a third-generation member of the Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home & Crematory family, I’ve had the privilege of supporting Roanoke-area families during some of life’s most difficult moments. That experience taught me the value of compassion, consistency and showing up when it matters most.
Where were you born and raised? What was your upbringing like?
I was born and raised in Roanoke. I’m forever grateful for the strong foundation my family gave me. My father, Michael Lee Hamlar, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in his early 40s and passed away in 2003. He was just 49 and I was a freshman at William Fleming High at the time.
Watching my mother, Betty Hamlar, care for him with unwavering love on top of raising me and my brother showed me what real strength, grace and faith looks like. Her quiet resilience shaped our home and our future.
After high school, what was the next chapter of your life?
After graduating from Cave Spring High, I continued working in the family business, where I’ve been actively involved for the last 18 years. During that time, I met my beautiful wife, Cara, and together we’ve built a faith-filled life. We’re blessed with our eight-year-old daughter, Lauren, who inspires me daily to lead with purpose and love.
What is your official title and what do your responsibilities consist of?
My official title at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home & Crematory is Insurance Specialist. I assist families by handling life insurance assignments to help cover funeral expenses, making the financial side as smooth and stress-free as possible. More than anything, my role is about answering the call when people need us the most. It’s a responsibility that I don’t take lightly – and one I approach with both faith and purpose
How important is family to you?
Family means everything to me. It’s the foundation of who I am and the reason I do what I do. I was raised in a home where love, faith and support were constant, even through life’s hardest challenges – like losing my father as a teen or overcoming major health battles as a child.
I understand that you founded Common Notary Apostille LLC. How did that come about?
As I continued to grow personally and professionally, I later founded Common Notary Apostille LLC., which now serves clients throughout Southwest Virginia, the Lynchburg area, Alexandria and the greater DMV. What began as a local notary service has grown into a trusted provider for Apostilles, estate planning and legal document notarization.
How would you describe your relationship with the City of Roanoke?
My relationship with Roanoke is personal, generational and deeply rooted in service. This city raised me, shaped me and gave my family the opportunity to build a legacy of helping others. From growing up here to attending local schools, Roanoke has always been home. My connection to Roanoke isn’t just professional – it’s personal. This city holds my history, my purpose and my heart.
Outside of your profession, what do your hobbies consist of?
I enjoy studying Scripture – it’s not just part of my faith, it’s part of my daily life and growth. I also love watching college football, especially during the fall. It’s a fun way to unwind and enjoy some friendly competition. But more than anything, I enjoy spending time with my family. Whether it’s a quiet evening at home, a day out with my wife and daughter or just laughing and catching up with loved ones, those are the moments that mean the most to me.
Why do you think that it’s important to give back?
I believe in giving back to the community that helped raise me. I previously served on the Roanoke City Electoral Board and currently serve on the Board of Zoning Appeals. I’m honored to also be a board member of the Blue Ridge Independent Living Center, the Beth Brown Science Foundation and the Hamlar Foundation. Each focuses on creating opportunities and long-term impact in our region.
If you could go back and give your younger self some advice, what would it be?
I’d say this: Be patient. Trust God’s timing. Don’t rush what he’s still preparing you for. I’d also remind myself that the tough seasons are part of the shaping process – that pain builds character, and setbacks often set you up for something greater. I’d tell myself not to worry so much about trying to have it all figured out. Instead, focus on being faithful, consistent and willing to grow. Most of all, I’d say, “You’re going to make it. And one day, everything you’re going through will help you serve others even better.”
