Who is Devante Holliday and how would you describe yourself to someone who has never met you?
I’m a fully devoted man of God, and a follower of Christ Jesus. I’m not perfect, but I’m relying on God’s grace to live righteously every single day. I’d say these are my top five attributes: loving, understanding, hardworking, teachable and patient.
Where were you born and raised? What was your upbringing like?
I was born and raised here in Roanoke. It all started at my grandmother’s house. My parents moved in with her when I was an infant. Looking back, it was by far the best financial decision, being that they were young and responsible for two boys. My grandmother introduced us to the church she attended and served at. So many memories that happened in church are moments that I will forever cherish.
After high school, what was the next chapter of your life?
To be perfectly honest, I didn’t know exactly what I was going to do with my life at 18. A good friend sparked my passion for photography and creativity. Before I knew it, we were business partners. It was a great ride, but a combination of factors saw that relationship come to an end. Several summers ago, I vividly remember thinking to myself, “You know, you’ve never really delved deep into the bible.”
It first started by listening to different artists. From there, I began to
build a genuine relationship with God. He has changed my life in so many ways. I am so happy that I made that decision years ago and have stuck with it.
What is your official title, and what do your responsibilities consist of?
At the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport, I am a Ramp Agent Lead for Choice Aviation Services. My primary responsibilities consist of directing daily ground operations, on-time aircraft turnarounds and team leadership. My other duties include marshalling aircraft, unloading cargo, operating Ground Support Equipment (GSE) and supervising team compliance with safety procedures. I mentor ramp agents and communicate with flight crews, too.
How important is family to you?
Family is extremely important! In this busy life we live in, I think it’s important to make time for those who matter the most. At some point, we all need help in some way, shape or form. My prayer is that my entire family comes to know and live for Jesus.
If you were building the ultimate music playlist for a six-hour road trip, which artists would be on it?
Wow, so many artists come to mind. For sure, Dunsin Oyekan, Theophilus Sunday, Ty Bello, Nathaniel Bassey, Phil Thompson, Elevation Worship, Moses Akoh, and Lawrence Oyor would be on it.
What are some of your favorite Roanoke memories?
The various photo shoots all around the city immediately come to mind. It’s something special about driving past places and remembering taking pictures there. I love going to the Star and praying all over the city.
One morning in 2016, a sheet of clouds stretched from Mill Mountain across the valley. All I could see was clouds. It felt like a view you could only get from inside a plane, yet I was standing there. What a sight that was! Growing up, I loved going to sporting events like the Roanoke Dazzle and Roanoke Express.
What are some of your hobbies?
I love to read and study the word of God. I also love practicing the piano, working out and playing basketball. At home, I’m known to cook restaurant-quality food. Taking pictures and watching educational videos also brings me much joy.
Which people have had the biggest impact on your life outside of family?
My pastors and leaders at my local church. They never give up on me, even when I’m at my lowest. They encourage me to be all that God has called me to be. They help pick me up. They entrust me to serve in ministry. Most importantly, they show and help me to be a true man of God.
If you could go back and give your younger self some advice, what would it be?
Simply, don’t wait until later to follow Jesus. The road is very narrow and not easy, but it’s beyond worth it. You will face many afflictions, trials and tribulations, but they cannot compare to the weight of the eternal glory that awaits you.
