Who is Diane Simmons?
I would describe myself as a goal-oriented, exceedingly determined person who looks to the future with positivity. I like to help people see the good in everything and encourage them to live a fulfilling life.
Where were you born and raised? What was your upbringing like?
I was born in Roanoke, but raised in Elliston. I grew up in a close-knit community where practically everyone was family, regardless if they were relatives or not. I watched my dad own and operate an auto body shop, a barber shop and work night shift for the railroad just to provide for his family. My mother took care of the household and instilled Christian values in me and my four brothers. I grew up in a very loving family. The older I get, the more I realize just how much of a blessing my upbringing was.
After high school, what was the next chapter of your life?
I received my bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech and went on to work for the advertising department of the Roanoke Times. Later, I attended Radford University Carilion for a respiratory therapy degree, which eventually led to me creating Simply Fitness LLC.
What is your official title and what do your responsibilities consist of?
As a certified health coach and personal trainer, I host fitness camps, pop-up events and educate the community on the importance of living a healthy life as well as how to incorporate practices in their lives.
As a Registered Respiratory Therapist, I deliver life-saving measures to individuals suffering from lung diseases and conditions like COPD, asthma, congestive heart failure or acute conditions like COVID-19 and pneumonia. I also help in special newborn deliveries and in the emergency department by applying life support machines.
How important is family to you?
Family is so important to me because, personally, I can always count on them to support me in all of my endeavors. They are a constant source of unconditional love.
If you were building the ultimate music playlist for a six-hour road trip, which artists would be on it?
Beyoncé and Prince for sure, but R&B , trap and hip-hop will definitely be in heavy rotation.
How would you describe your relationship with the City of Roanoke?
Roanoke has been great to me. I moved here in 2009 and have been welcomed by the community. I love hosting events for citizens of the Star City because they continually support my efforts. For that, I am extremely thankful.
Outside of your profession, what do your hobbies consist of?
I enjoy anything creative. I love cooking and creating new recipes, as well as interior design and decor.
Which people have had the biggest impact on your life outside of your family?
I admire many people, especially successful Black female leaders in their respective professions. To me, Beyonce demonstrates qualities I find to be admirable – she’s extremely hard-working, has creative self-expression and uses her platform to provide opportunities for others to walk through uncharted territories. She is also a cheerful giver and has a heart for people.
If you could go back and give your younger self some advice, what would it be?
Believe in yourself and be your full self. There are so many people who will try to project self-limiting fears on you, but remember, you are a child of God and through Christ, all things are possible.
