Who is Melissa Kelly, and how would you describe yourself to someone who has never met you?
I am an artist, writer and visionary. I am determined, driven and motivated. There is a lot of unseen talent in Roanoke, and I am working on having films and movies created within our community to help put our city on the map. I would love to see all of us win.
Where were you born and raised? What was your upbringing like?
I was born and raised in Roanoke. I often spent my summers in Baltimore, Maryland, with other family members. Baltimore was sort of a culture shock coming from a small city, but I adapted well.
After high school, what was the next chapter of your life?
I was three months pregnant when I graduated from William Fleming, so I focused on providing for my son. I worked various jobs until I found my niche, which turned out to be healthcare.
What is your official title, and what do your responsibilities consist of?
I am an author, ghostwriter and professional screenwriter. Currently, I’m working on adding producer and director to my resume. I have written and published 14 books, all of which can be found on Amazon, Walmart or Barnes & Noble under my pen names “Lady Kellz” and “Author Mimi.”
I transitioned from being an author to a professional screenwriter. This happened, primarily, because I found it more exciting mingling with industry professionals. I cannot wait until the day I see my name on the big screen.
How important is family to you?
Family is everything to me. Family made me who I am. I lost my dad in January 2022. He was my best friend. He never judged me. He loved me unconditionally. My mom has always been my biggest supporter in everything, from when I was a child to today. Without them, who knows where I would have ended up?
If you were building the ultimate music playlist for a six-hour road trip, which artists would be on it?
I love 90s era music, so my playlist would include Eric B & Rakim, TLC, En Vogue, Nas, artists like that.
What are some of your favorite City of Roanoke memories?
Attending football games at Victory Stadium was always a great time. Because I grew up before social media existed, I got to enjoy what being a kid truly means. Those were the good old days.
What are some of your hobbies?
Reading, writing, watching movies, bowling and spending quality time with loved ones, especially my two grandchildren, Ava and Jr.
Which people have had the biggest impact on your life outside of family?
I would say Ms. Gallagher, my former English teacher at Fleming, because she encouraged my writing at an early age. She gave me confidence at a time when I needed it the most.
If you could go back and give your younger self some advice, what would it be?
Do not worry about what other people think. Simply do what makes you happy. I would also remind her not to get upset over a “no.” With hard work and consistency, sometimes a “no” can turn into a “yes.” Most importantly, to always believe in yourself.
