Who is Precious McCullough and how would you describe yourself to someone who has never met you?
I’d describe myself as smart, funny and deeply authentic. I try to lead with kindness and remain non-judgmental, thoughtful and caring in both my personal and professional life. I’m a hard worker, resourceful by nature and someone who genuinely enjoys helping people navigate change and find solutions.
Where were you born and raised? What was your upbringing like?
I was born in Danville, Virginia, where I attended Governor’s School and developed an early interest in science and math. I was raised by my grandparents and father in a very village-oriented environment. I spent a lot of time outdoors and in church, surrounded by family and community.
Although my grandparents were working-class and lived simply, they were intentional about exposing me to cultural experiences. I’m classically trained in piano, played the viola in my high school orchestra and have always loved to sing. I was very involved in school, participating in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Upward Bound, the school magazine, a high school sorority, the NAACP, volleyball and even keeping score for the girls’ basketball team. That sense of curiosity and involvement still shapes who I am today.
After high school, what was the next chapter of your life?
I attended Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), where I earned my undergraduate degree in Clinical Laboratory Science. I spent eight years working in a microbiology lab within the VCU Health System and later managed a pediatric laboratory.
In 2020, I decided to take a leap of faith and explore a new path. I left healthcare, earned my real estate license and began selling real estate full-time. That transition eventually led me into property management, where I discovered a space that blended my analytical background, leadership experience and people-focused approach.
What is your official title, and what do your responsibilities consist of?
I am currently a residential and commercial property manager. I oversee a mixed portfolio of more than 400 residential and commercial units across 40 owners. My role includes serving as the primary point of contact for owners and residents, strengthening owner relationships, reducing vacancies and improving the overall resident experience through thoughtful communication and process improvement. I’ve also supported leasing and marketing strategies for new developments, helping owners move from planning through stabilization.
How important is family to you?
Family is everything to me. I’m a single mother of two boys, and nearly every decision I make is rooted in their well-being and long-term success. I’m very intentional about spending quality time with family and friends. Having experienced significant loss in my life, I’m keenly aware of how quickly things can change, which has taught me to value presence, connection and balance.
If you were building the ultimate music playlist for a six-hour road trip, which artists would be on it?
Kendrick Lamar, Yebba, Masego, Jazmine Sullivan, Luther Vandross and Kanye West. My playlist would be a mix of soul, storytelling and jazz.
What are some of your favorite City of Roanoke memories?
Dickens of a Christmas and Go Fest are two of my favorite Roanoke traditions. I’ve also made some unforgettable memories hiking in the area. Driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway in the fall is truly unmatched.
What are some of your hobbies?
I enjoy yoga, hiking, reading and walking along the greenway. Community service is also very important to me, particularly my involvement with my sorority, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
Which people have had the biggest impact on your life outside of family?
Early in my healthcare career, seeing Roxanne Mercer, the director of my department, was incredibly impactful. As a Black woman in leadership, she shifted my perspective and helped me see what was possible.
My manager at VCU, Susan Kannedy, also played a major role in shaping my leadership style by consistently encouraging and trusting me with responsibility, even when I didn’t feel ready.
In real estate, my first broker, Maureen Gasink, encouraged me to take the leap into the industry, a decision that ultimately changed the course of my career.
If you could go back and give your younger self some advice, what would it be?
I would tell her to just do her thing. It’s okay to fail, and it’s okay if things don’t turn out exactly as planned. Trying, learning and showing up matter far more than waiting for the perfect moment.
