Who is… Stephanie Picado?
I’d describe myself as a fun, faith-driven, and people-loving person who always tries to bring a little light and laughter wherever I go. I’m the type that would give a stranger the shirt off my back if it would make a difference. I’m passionate about helping others, staying focused on my goals and trusting God to guide every step of the journey.
Where were you born and raised? What was your upbringing like?
I was born in San José, Costa Rica. After moving around quite a bit, my family finally settled in Roanoke from New York in 2001. My upbringing was strict, but it shaped my drive and determination to prove myself and make my parents proud. Education was always front and center – my dad used to say it’s the one thing no one can ever take away from you. As an immigrant, those words carried a weight that still fuels my passion today.
After high school, what was the next chapter of your life?
My journey took a different path than most. I became a young mom. While trying to keep my dreams alive, I had to balance work and school while raising my kids. It wasn’t easy, but that chapter in my life taught me resilience, faith, and the power of perseverance. Looking back, I wouldn’t trade those lessons for anything.
What is your official title, and what do your responsibilities consist of?
I’m the Student Engagement & Fiscal Coordinator at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. In this role, I get to support students through engagement initiatives, while also managing the financial side of various programs and events. It’s the perfect balance of people and purpose. I love being able to make a difference in students’ lives while keeping everything running smoothly behind the scenes.
How important is family to you?
Family is everything to me – it’s my foundation, my motivation and my heart. They’re the reason I push through challenges and celebrate even the smallest victories. No matter how busy life gets, I always make time for the people who remind me who I am and keep me grounded in love and faith.
If you were building the ultimate music playlist for a six-hour road trip, which artists would be on it
My road trip playlist would be all over the place, in the best way possible! I’d mix in a little Pop, R&B, Rock, Latin Vibes and Rap, but the real stars would be those 90s and early 2000s hits that never get old. Car karaoke is my jam, so if you’re riding with me, get ready to sing your heart out.
What are some of your favorite City of Roanoke memories?
Some of my favorite memories take me right back to simpler times. These include watching my brother play for Fleming at Victory Stadium and feeling that hometown pride. Also, going to the mall at Christmas when the singing bears were still around – it just felt magical. The parades, too. There’s something about the community coming together that always warms my heart.
Outside of your profession, what do your hobbies consist of?
I stay busy doing what I love most: coaching high school track, spending time hiking outdoors and keeping up with my kids and all their sports. I thrive on that mix of movement, motivation and family time. It keeps me grounded and energized.
Which people have had the biggest impact on your life outside of family?
Outside of my family, the people who’ve had the biggest impact on my life are my travel track coaches. They’ve poured into me over the years with guidance, encouragement, and grace, shaping not just my coaching journey, but who I am as a person. I won’t name names, but my Tiger Family knows exactly who they are and the difference they’ve made in my life.
If you could go back and give your younger self some advice, what would it be?
I’d tell her to trust the journey and not be so hard on herself. Life might not go as planned, but every twist and turn is shaping her into someone stronger, wiser and more resilient. Also, to never underestimate the power of her own heart and determination.
