Who is Tonya Young?
I would describe myself as a caring and loving person who is always willing to help others. I’m selfless and big on teamwork. This is because I believe great things happen when people work together. I can be a little shy initially, but once I’m comfortable, I’m outgoing, funny and love making people laugh. I always give my best in everything that I do.
Where were you born and raised? What was your upbringing like?
I am originally from Buchanan, Virginia, a small town where I lived until the age of ten. From there, my family moved to Roanoke. I grew up with both of my parents and four siblings. Those experiences taught me the importance of teamwork, family and balance. I was inspired early on by the example that my parents set. My childhood was filled with meaningful experiences — from learning basketball, which became a passion of mine, to enjoying fishing trips with my dad and making memories with my mom. These moments shaped me into a caring, hardworking and family-oriented person.
After high school, what was the next chapter of your life?
I entered a new chapter of my life when I became a mother to my son, who is now 16. Becoming a parent at a young age required me to mature quickly and take on adult responsibilities earlier than most of my peers. Although it initially meant putting my goals and education on hold, the experience taught me accountability and strength. Balancing life’s challenges at a young age wasn’t easy, but it gave me perspective and shaped me into the determined, compassionate, and hardworking person I am today.
What is your official title and what do your responsibilities consist of?
I am a mother, coach, and mentor who is fully committed to my five children and their growth – from school to everyday life. I’m passionate about sharing culture and guiding youth to see their potential, helping them learn, grow, and avoid mistakes I made. I mentor because I strive to be the person I needed growing up — someone who inspires, supports and elevates others. This is my purpose, and it’s what I love doing every day. I am also an employee at Berkshire Health & Rehab Center.
How important is family to you?
Family means everything to me, especially the one I created. I love being surrounded by love, laughter and all the little moments that make us who we are. Being a mother has given me a kind of strength and joy I never knew I had. My family is my heart, my peace and my greatest blessing.
If you were building an ultimate playlist for a six-hour car ride, which artists would be on it?
Without question, it would have Keith Sweat, Frankie Beverly, J. Cole and some gospel music.
What are some of your favorite City of Roanoke memories?
Waking up every Saturday morning to head to Booker T. Washington for our recreational games, creating memories with my friends and attending community events with my family.
Outside of your profession, what do your hobbies consist of?
Going to local basketball games to support my former basketball players, taking the youth to different events to give them new experiences and catching up on my shows with loved ones.
Which people have had the biggest impact on your life outside of family?
Renita Howard (middle school coach), Angela Terry (high school coach), Marty Bishop (mentor) and Ryan, Champ Hubbard (coaches). All of these people have played vital roles in my life. They don’t just talk the walk, they back it up with actions. They have always been there for me, regardless of what I was going through. I honestly don’t know who or where I would be today if I didn’t have the right people in my life at a time when I needed them the most.
If I could go back and give my younger self some advice, what would it be?
It would be to take your time. Focus on what matters the most, and remember that life is a marathon, not a sprint. I would also tell her not to be in such a rush to grow up. It is okay to not have all of the answers right now. Listen to your heart, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
