Who is Wayne E. Hancock II?
I would describe myself as a very musical ambivert man who is spiritual, thoughtful and ambitious.
Where were you born and raised? What was your upbringing like?
I was born inside the LewisGale Hospital in Salem, and grew up in Roanoke. My parents worked very hard. They were fair, but very religious and strict. My upbringing centered around academics, basketball and church. I was a very active child.
After high school, what was the next chapter of your life?
Once high school was over, I joined the Army. Looking back, it was one of the best decisions that I ever made.
What is your official title, and what do your responsibilities consist of?
I wear many titles – music executive, artist, a host and coach. I co-own a production team (The Ring Music Group) in which I develop and mentor artists, among many other things.
CodeGrey is a multi-cultural rap group that has members from Philly, New York and Roanoke who have earned Grammy nominations. This includes Star City natives Rayshon Cobbs Jr., who is known professionally as 808-Ray and Ari Spencer, who goes by Zoom.
How important is family to you?
In one word, everything! I am a proud father of two beautiful, talented daughters. They are the world to me. I am also fortunate enough to have two great parents and brothers, too.
If you were building the ultimate music playlist for a six-hour road trip, which artists would be on it?
To say that I love music would be a massive understatement. On this playlist would be D’Angelo, Nas, Kendrick Lamar, Quincy Jones, Faith Evans, 112 and, of course, OutKast.
What are some of your favorite City of Roanoke memories?
Growing up, I spent so much time at Eureka Park. So many memories were made there. The same can be said for various performances with Men of Distinction and hanging out with friends.
What are some of your hobbies?
In addition to playing basketball, I enjoy reading, chess and playing poker. I love supporting my colleagues. The Ring Music Group consists of music titans like Carvin Haggins, who discovered Musiq Soulchild and Ab Liva, who wrote hits for some of the biggest names in the industry.
Which people have had the biggest impact on your life outside of family?
Fletcher Nichols has always been a great mentor. Other individuals who have had a major impact on my life include Jerel “Tank” Rhodes, Clarence Hilton, Guy Henderson, John Brown and Clint Barlow.
If you could go back and give your younger self some advice, what would it be?
Always seek wisdom and value logic over how you feel. Be patient, and let things play out. And remember, balance is the most important thing you will ever find.
