The Winter Classic has historically showcased local and regional high school basketball teams with top talent. Many past participants have gone on to further their basketball career at the college or professional level. This year, there will be 3 match-ups prior to the 7:00 p.m. marquee ‘Mayor’s Cup’ game.
The goal of the Winter Classic is not just to showcase emerging talent, but also to serve as a reminder of the great resources focused on strengthening members of the community that exist.
“It’s hard to believe that this will be the fifth year of the Lea’s Winter Classic at Berglund Center,” stated General Manager Robyn Schon. “This event continues to provide a platform for high school basketball teams and players to showcase their talent in a large venue. Some of the players have gone on to play in college and the NBA. We’d like to think that playing in the Lea’s Winter Classic will be a great memory for each of them.”
“The Lea family is honored to host the 5th annual High School Winter Classic at Berglund Center,” stated Roanoke Mayor Sherman Lea, Sr. “In these five years, we have seen a tremendous amount of talent walk through those doors. We hope that Lea’s Winter Classic not only showcases local talent, but brings our community closer and inspires young people to follow their dreams!”
Sherman Lea and New Hope Support Services will be the title sponsors of the event. The City of Roanoke is also a supporting sponsor.
