For more than 15 years, the William Fleming High Athletic Department has honored its best and greatest with induction into its Hall of Fame.
Even though it’s been nearly two decades since his talents as a multi-sport athlete demoralized opponents, Curtis’ name is still spoken with great reverence.
In addition to an 80-yard punt return for a touchdown against William Byrd in 2002, the former star was a top competitor for the long jump with a 23-03.75 measurement as a junior.
Out of the millions and millions of basketball players in the world, just 5,000 men have ever played in the NBA. Daniels is among that select group.
Over his career with the Houston Rockets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Charlotte Hornets, Memphis Grizzlies, Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets, the Roanoke native averaged nearly seven points a game while shooting 40 percent from behind the arc.
Today, Hubbard is best known as the founder of Flycodes Apparel, a company that makes customized high-performance gear for teams, companies and individuals.
Before the entrepreneur gave everyone an opportunity to represent their school and city, he built a championship-level culture as the head coach for the girls’ basketball program for a decade.
After Fleming, Kitchens accepted a football scholarship to play at Marshall University. During his time with the Thundering Herd, the 6’3, 230-pound specimen contributed as both a defensive end and linebacker.
The true embodiment of a student-athlete, McGeorge was named a distinguished scholar in high school en route to graduating in the top ten percent of her class. On the hardwood, she was named the 2010 Western Valley District Player of the Year.
At American University, she majored in public communication with a minor in multiethnic studies.
The Athletic Hall of Fame Committee consists of nine individuals: Chairperson Sherman Stovall, Athletic Director Jamie Bednarek, Principal Tracey Anderson, Booster Club President Dorothy Lavender, Head Girls Basketball Coach Richard Wilson, Jan Bruce (at-large member), Dwayne Priest (at-large member), Ernie Webb (at-large member) and Melvin Garrett (at-large member).
HOF membership is only granted to those who exemplify high standards, have brought honor to their community through outstanding athletic achievement and are held in high esteem by their peers.
The induction ceremony will be held in December. When the selectees give their speeches, they are sure to thank former coaches, teammates and family members who played a vital role in their journey.
“Colonel Pride” will be on full display that day.
