Participants were inspired by the diversity and depth of experience of the panelists for Roanoke’s first International Women’s Day. Google dedicated their search engine to International Women’s Day and events around the world are trending in social media.
The event started with Girl Scouts of America Troop 1051 leading the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Kathryn Sowers, president GFWC Southeastern Region, executive assistant for the Vinton area Chamber of Commerce said, “I am proud to be a part of an event that celebrates all women while encouraging equality and hopefully in some small way Making It Happen. We as women have come a long way, but we still have so much more to accomplish before we reach the goal.”
Brenda Hale, president Roanoke Branch NAACP, said, “As an African American woman I am honored to be in the arena with such distinguished accomplished women.”
Anne Sterling, president, Virginia League of Women Voters encouraged participants to ask this year’s candidates for the General Assembly if they will pledge to vote for the Equal Rights Amendment.
LeeRay Costa, founder of Girls Rock Roanoke, spoke about the need to provide girls with positive experiences to bolster their self-confidence.
Lucy Coronado, program director of Girls Rock Roanoke, wrote and performed a song for the audience to encourage women to share their talents with the world.
Freeda Cathcart, organizer of the Roanoke International Women’s Day, expressed gratitude to South Roanoke County Library for supporting this important event for our community.
