The 64th Annual Conclave of Chums, Inc. was held on October 16-19, 2025, in Richmond, VA. “The Harlem of the South” was the weekend’s theme. The Roanoke Chums were among 300 total participants, including Chums, Hums, Associates, and guests.
During the Conclave, the Roanoke chapter was recognized for the 65th anniversary of its chartering. Roanoke’s Francine McLaughlin was also congratulated for her 40 years of membership in the organization.
Former Virginia Governor, L. Douglas Wilder, was the guest speaker at the “Listen to the Children” luncheon. In addition to the elegant luncheon, the Conclave included two dinner dances with the Harlem Renaissance theme, as well as business meetings and workshops.
Collectively, Chums served 27,938 people by providing goods or services from volunteerism across the nation. Chums contributed over $199,000 in monetary donations. Included in these amounts were donations and volunteer hours the Roanoke Chapter made to the Toadally Kidz Child Care Centers and the Melrose Branch Library.
In expanding its commitment to Chums national theme, “Listen to the Children…enrich their lives,” it was announced that two national organizations were recognized for their impactful work with African American youth. Black Girls Code and Life Pieces to Masterpieces were each awarded $5,000. The National Founders’ Scholarship totaling $5,000 was awarded to three outstanding graduating seniors.
Pamela Edwards, the Roanoke chapter president, and her Hum, Bob, attended the Conclave. Also attending were Marla Burch, Stella Carpenter, Francine McLaughlin, Bethanie Mickles, Muriel Mickles, Gaynelle Pearson, Faye Shareef, Carol Shropshire-Wimbush, and Hums Sterling McLaughlin, Reginald Shareef, and Ken Gravely.
