Community fundraiser launched to support local families during the holidays

If Melvin Ward had to describe himself in ten words, he says among them would be grateful, empathetic and persistent. “Grateful because I know how much I’ve overcome in life to be where I am today, empathetic because I know the impact that a stranger’s kindness can have and persistent because when I set out to accomplish a goal, I do everything in my power to get across the finish line,” he said.

When Ward felt that more could be done during the holidays for struggling families, he took it upon himself to be the change he wanted to see.

For the last two decades, Ward has brought his Hip Hop Santa character to nursing homes, homeless shelters and various other community venues. He started at the Richmond Community Hospital, where he used to regularly visit patients. When he met his wife, Revonda, and moved to Roanoke, he continued his mission of making a difference.

“Growing up, my mother constantly told me to ‘help whoever you can with whatever you have.’ Hip Hop Santa allows me to follow my mother’s advice. So many people work behind the scenes to make this a reality. People volunteer their time and donate money, which makes all the difference. From experience, I can tell you that the smallest gesture can have the biggest impact on one’s life.”

Being a member of the Buffalo Soldiers Star City Motorcycle Club has also allowed Ward to help shelter the homeless, feed underserved families on Thanksgiving and serve as a role model for the youth.

How impactful a person is in their community has a lot to do with listening to different perspectives and taking constructive criticism. In Ward’s case, his willingness to go the extra mile to get the job done is well-known throughout the Roanoke Valley.

“A telling sign of one’s true intentions is how they treat people. I’ve been able to accomplish a lot because I don’t have all the answers and rely on those who do. Seeing so many families react to our efforts is a feeling that never gets old,” he said.
