The Roanoke Chapter Continental Societies, Inc. presented its 7th Annual “Black Girls Really Rock” Queens of Africa program on Saturday, March 17, in William Fleming High School, Dickenson Auditorium. With an atmosphere of sisterhood, fellowship, and stewardship, all honored wore their African inspired attire. The program recognized eight area women who have been positive role models and public servants in the Roanoke Valley.
Honorees were Tami Amos (Education); Cynthia Coles (Marketing Manager); Shelia Herron (Student Services); Gloria Manns (Social Work); Linda Manns (Nursing); Neesey Payne (Media); Evangelist Nicole Ross (Religion) and Anita Wilson (Musician).
In addition, four high school girls who are making a Distinct Difference (M.A.D.D.) in their communities were honored with the 2018 M.A.D.D. Girls Award. They were Tiana Horace (William Fleming High School/Governor’s School); Majesty Jones (William Fleming High School); Kameron Washington-Brown (William Fleming High School); Yeblee Willis Desta (Patrick Henry High School).
Melinda Payne, City of Salem, Planning and Economic Development Director and Ms. Bianca Hollman, WDBJ 7 News Anchor served as excellent Mistresses of Ceremonies. The audience enjoyed choral musical performances by the UPraize Music Lab Gospel Band under the direction of Bernadette Brown and soulful Gospel solos performed by January Hairston, and God’s House Baptist Ministries, Praise Dancers and spirit-filled liturgical dances along with Director Morgan McAfee.
Black Girls Really Rock Program proceeds go to assist the Roanoke Chapter of Continental Societies to continue to provide programming for Roanoke area youth and scholarships to high school seniors, as well as an Endowed scholarship at Virginia Western Community College. The Chapter also gave out many door prizes during this event sponsored by a number or local businesses and supporters.
Continental Societies, Inc. is a non-profit, tax exempt, international service organization whose mission is dedicated to serving children and youth and providing services in the areas of Health, Education, Employment, Recreation, and the Arts and Humanities. Program Chair is Linda Journiette.
