The City of Roanoke was named a 2025 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of our commitment to plant, grow and maintain trees to benefit the community.
“Trees play a vital role in the quality of life we enjoy in Roanoke,” said Roanoke Mayor Joseph L. Cobb. “This recognition highlights the work we’ve done together as a community and reflects our commitment to investing in a healthier, greener and more resilient future.”
The City’s Urban Forestry Team plants trees to help reduce storm water runoff, improve air quality and create cooler, healthier neighborhoods across Roanoke.
“We’re the beneficiaries of more than 30 years of thoughtful urban forestry in Roanoke,” adds Bill West who heads the City of Roanoke’s Urban Forestry Team. “The heart of our work today is to care for that investment by maintaining a healthy tree canopy and continuing to strategically plant for the future of our community.”
The Arbor Day Foundation praised the City’s commitment to thoughtful tree management and the quality-of-life benefits that a healthy urban forest provides.
“Tree champions like Roanoke are leading the way in a growing movement to shape a better future with trees and action,” said Michelle Saulnier, Vice President of Programs at the Arbor Day Foundation. “Trees are critical infrastructure, building resiliency and fostering good health in our nation’s cities.
