Jada Cook

-Compiled and edited by Shawn Nowlin

Who is Jada Cook and how would you describe yourself to someone who has never met you?

I am a student-athlete continuing my academic and collegiate basketball journey at Stony Brook University on Long Island, New York. I describe myself as ambitious, with high expectations, but also as someone with good character and heart.

Where were you born and raised? What was your upbringing like?

I was born and raised in Roanoke. My upbringing was very supportive. My parents sacrificed a lot to make sure that my brother and I had the best childhood and life possible.

You are a graduate of Patrick Henry High School. How would you best describe what those four years mean to you?

My years at Patrick Henry were very developmental for what awaits me in the real world. Beyond my success on the court, Patrick Henry taught me the importance of valuing the relationships with the people around me and the importance of who you surround yourself with.

Growing up, your dad was often your basketball coach. What was that experience like?

My dad pushed me to become the best version of myself, both in basketball and life. At times, it was hard to separate him from those different roles. Overall, it was a great experience and something that I deeply cherish. Having someone who believes in your abilities, family or not, is a blessing.

After high school, you accepted a basketball scholarship to Murray State University. You have since transferred to Stony Brook University. Why did you make that decision?

My choice to transfer was to further my development in basketball. Stony Brook gave me the opportunity to showcase all my talents. Not to say that Murray State didn’t help me grow, but in my next chapter at Stony Brook, I feel like I will be in a better position to unlock my full potential.

How important is family to you?

Family is very important to me. Without them and their support, I would not be the person or player that I am today. They motivate me every single day.

If you were building the ultimate music playlist for a six-hour road trip, which artists would be on it?

I love music! This playlist would include Drake, Kendrick Lamar, SZA and Beyonce. Of course, the all-time greats would be on it, too.

Outside of basketball, what are some of your hobbies?

I like to build LEGOs. As of late, I’ve been getting into different book genres.

Which people have had the biggest impact on your life, both as an athlete and a person?

Two words, my parents. Hearing their testimonies of life and the sacrifices they’ve made has truly shaped me. So many people have estranged relationships with their parents. I am lucky to have both in my life.

What do you see yourself doing with your life in the next ten years?

In the next decade, I see myself working in clinical or counseling psychology, either as a therapist or a psychiatrist. I am passionate about helping people in need.
