
The Roanoke Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. sponsored the Health and Violence: “Her Story; Her Voice” program at the Rescue Mission on Saturday, March 25. The international Awareness Committee has joined with UNiTE to End Violence against Women. The United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon has spearheaded this initiative to prevent violence against women and girls around the world.
The UNiTE campaign calls on all governments, civil society, women’s organizations, men, young people, the private sector, the media and the entire UN system to join forces in addressing this global pandemic.
The International Awareness Committee partnered with the Rescue Mission to support the UNiTE Campaign. Sheila Herron, with “Be That Girl,” presented a poem entitled, Ms. Millie’s Red Dress. Mailaika Hewett read an original poem, “I Am in Love with A Man;” I Am in Love with Jesus Christ!
Keynote speaker, Sorority Sister, Andre’ Douglas, shared stories of violence and empowerment with the women at the Rescue Mission from her knowledge as a medical professional of violence against women. Ms. Douglas shared her personal story of being a survivor of violence and how this changed the trajectory of her personal life.
The program concluded with a powerful dance performance by Wanda Reid; a delicious luncheon and gifts for all in attendance.
