Even though Father’s Day is a few weeks away, for one Roanoke dad, he just experienced a type of feeling that money can’t buy.
To say that Donald Tinsley is a proud parent would be an understatement. A few years ago, he and his son, Brandon Williams, started their education journey together in the respiratory therapy program at Radford University Carilion (RUC). On May 10, the duo earned their Bachelor of Science degrees during the Spring Commencement Ceremony.
While commencement ceremonies usually see family and friends supporting a loved one, it’s unique for a parent and their child to graduate at the same time.
The unique moment that Donald and Brandon shared together did not happen without both having to overcome several life hurdles.
“I was a student at Virginia University Community College, and was looking to build on my education,” Brandon said. “My roommate was a student in the nursing program at RUC and suggested that I visit the Office of Admissions to see if there was any interest. I’m so glad that I took that advice.”
Williams’ transition was so seamless that he encouraged his father to also enroll in the program.
“We began this journey together and saw it all the way through. We rode to school together, rode to work together and even had our lunch breaks at the same time. Having each other to rely on made all the difference in the world,” he said.
Added Tinsley, “In my opinion, Radford University’s respiratory therapy department is one of the best in the nation. What a great springboard to one’s next level of education.”
Seeing everything his dad endured and persevered through gave Brandon a greater appreciation of just how hard you have to work in life to accomplish your goals. “Learning is something that has always been fun for my dad. I’m so proud of him,” he said.
Sharing the stage with his son is something that Donald will never forget. “Graduating alongside Brandon is one of the most meaningful milestones of my life. No one gave us this accomplishment, we earned it through sacrifices and consistency,” he said.
On average, respiratory therapists make around $75,000 annually in the Roanoke Valley.
What’s next for the duo? Both intend on getting additional hands-on clinical hours while also earning their master’s degrees together.
Together, Donald and Brandon have taught us all a valuable life lesson: one is never too old to learn, and parents can accomplish their goals too alongside their children.
