When Marcus Brower was a senior at William Fleming High in 2012, he rooted for his Colonels against every opponent they faced on the gridiron, the hardwood or in the classroom.
Today, with the recent hiring as their varsity strength coach, Brower is one of Salem High School’s biggest ambassadors.
Brower comes with several years of coaching experience, particularly at the youth level. The difference between a good coach and a great one often comes down to treating sports as a tool for lifelong development while prioritizing growth over the scoreboard.
When Walter Moyer, a beloved 12-year-old with a bright athletic future, passed away earlier this month due to complications from a medical procedure, Brower reached out to the family to send his condolences.
“This devastating loss is difficult to comprehend, and our entire community mourns alongside his family, friends and teammates,” Salem High Athletic Director Drew Barrett shared on Facebook, along with Brower. “Please keep Walter’s family, teammates, classmates, and the entire Salem community in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”
Salem High has a rich history in athletics. A perennial football contender with multiple championships, the Spartans have also won two boys’ basketball state titles, in 1994 and 1999, as well as a girls’ title in 2013. If all goes according to plan, Brower will play a vital role in adding to that legacy sooner rather than later.
Those familiar with Brower’s pedigree believe that he is the right hire for this moment.
