When people have a fear of speaking, it’s called “glossophobia.”
Growing up, Roanoke native Jaime Smith says it was rare for her to see a female speaker in her school or community and not feel that she was incredibly nervous.
“When I reflect on my career as a leader, both personally and professionally, I often ask myself a simple question: “Was I worthy of being listened to, and did I come across with confidence? If I knew back then what I know today, I would have certainly done some things differently,” Smith said.
“Giving women the tools and confidence to lead and make decisions on equal footing is what female empowerment is all about. When the decision-making power is put solely in the hands of men, the results are often predictable,” she added.
Part of the national network, the Roanoke chapter of Mic Drop Club is committed to helping women strengthen their voices in communities all across the country. More than just PTA meetings, the organization helps women gain confidence in boardrooms, sales calls and everyday conversations too.
Katie Beach is one of the Roanoke chapter organizers. “I am so excited about bringing this to our region and I know there are so many women who can benefit from this,” she wrote on her Facebook page.
“For a long time, I’ve been searching for a space to hone my speaking skills and take some safe risks while also building community,” Executive Coach Julia Korn said. “Mic Drop Club is that and more. Whether you’re a professional speaker, someone who presents regularly at work, a business owner, or simply someone who’s interested in learning, this club is for you.”
Shinica Thomas, Mic Drop Club Commissioner and DEI Champion, spent several years working in corporate settings. From experience, she says the organizations that foster female diversity and leadership always end up with more competitive, creative and productive teams.
“The opportunity to learn, apply and socialize with like-minded women all in a safe, welcoming space is game-changing. My speaking, community and confidence is better for it,” she said.
Built by women for women, Mic Drop Club’s motto is, “Amazing things happen when women hold the mic.”
Virtual meet-ups are held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month. The next in-person meetup is scheduled for December.
