An aura of peace and unity is already emanating amid the excitement that still prevails following last week’s historic election that resulted in Virginians electing its first female governor; first-ever Muslim woman elected to statewide office; first African American attorney general; as well as the Democrats completing a clean statewide sweep in Virginia. Such a feat speaks volumes of the maturation of the predominately White population that spearheaded and remained totally involved in the unprecedented organization and operation of the entire campaigns from start to finish.
Yet we find a few (in comparison) disgruntled opponents of the election results who are venting their frustration on others. Although irrational and unreasonable actions are seldom based on logic, the fact remains that the results of this election did not occur through a turbulent coup as such unprecedented change usually occurs in other parts of the world. It was the outcome of an “election” by the majority of people in the majority of this democracy! What a comforting feeling.
From the Baha’i children’s classes we learn: “All the virtues (trustworthiness, fairness, tolerance, love, justice, etc.) must be taught the entire family … The injury of one shall be considered the injury of all; the comfort of each, the comfort of all; the honor of one, the honor of all.” (The family of mankind no exception.)
“They (the children of men) must favor character and conduct above the sciences and arts to guard against the prostitution of each. Good behavior and high moral character must come first for unless the character be trained, acquiring knowledge will only prove injurious. Knowledge is praiseworthy when it is coupled with ethical conduct and a virtuous character, otherwise it is a deadly poison, a frightful danger.”
Surveys over the past week reflect an overwhelming confidence that the virtues and character of the ones entering the driver’s seat of our American democracy will help stabilize the economy in due time and chart the course of our nation in the fulfillment of its high destiny as expressed in this Baha’i Prayer for America …
“O Thou kin lord! This gathering is turning to Thee. These hearts are radiant with Thy love. These minds and spirits are exhilarated by the message of Thy glad-tidings. O God! Let this American democracy become glorious in spiritual degrees even as it has aspired to material degrees, and render this just government victorious. Confirm this revered nation to upraise the standard of the oneness of humanity, to promulgate the Most Great Peace, to become thereby most glorious and praiseworthy among all the nations of the world. O God! This American nation is worthy of Thy favors and is deserving of Thy mercy. Make it precious and near to Thee through Thy bounty and bestowal.”
O Friends, be not carless of the virtues with which ye have been endowed. Neither be neglectful of your high destiny.
