The City of Roanoke will begin Riverland Road pedestrian improvements and Star Trail parking lot enhancements in mid-April.
The project will deliver a new sidewalk and pedestrian connection from the Garden City Greenway to the Star Trail, improve drainage and water quality, and rebuild the parking area with new paving and enhanced lighting.
Construction is expected to continue through fall 2026.
“This project is an investment in both safety and long-term sustainability for the area,” said Public Works Director Ross Campbell. “By improving pedestrian access, upgrading drainage and enhancing the parking area, we’re creating a better experience for residents and visitors. We recognize construction can be disruptive, and our team is working closely with our contractor to reduce impacts and keep the community informed.”
A portion of Riverland Road, from 9th Street to Garden City Boulevard, will be closed to through traffic during the construction period. A signed detour will direct drivers via 9th Street, Jamison Road and 13th Street.
The Star Trail parking lot will remain closed during construction. Alternative parking for trail users is available at the Roanoke Star and Discovery Center, 2000 J.B. Fishburn Parkway, and along Mill Mountain Spur Road.
Funding for the $2.8 million project is provided through the Virginia Department of Transportation Regional Surface Transportation Program, the High Infrastructure Program and a local city match.
