Four years ago, a Celebration of African Cultures, highlighting music, food and community connections, made its debut in Roanoke. Last Saturday, Aug. 23, Countryside Park hosted the latest iteration of the event from 1 to 4 p.m.
“This is an outdoor festival. It is a collaboration between Local Colors and CommUNITY ARTSreach. It came about in 2022 from a conversation I had with Bernadetta Lark,” Lisa Spencer, Executive Director of Local Colors of Western VA, said. “While we celebrate cultures from all over the world, there was something missing in terms of something for African cultures.”
People from all walks of life gathered at Countryside Park to celebrate the strength, beauty and spirit of the African Diaspora. Alongside live music performances, the event also featured authentic food, garments and much more. With so much going on, there was truly something for everyone.
“The initial idea was to present different cultures through music, food, storytelling and fashion. For the first two years, the event was held indoors,” Spencer said. “Last year, we made the decision to move it outdoors. What a great decision that was.”
Trinity Claudine says compared to when the celebration began, there’s been more awareness about the impact those in the African community have throughout the Roanoke Valley. “This year’s celebration felt more like a homecoming. Like a cultural reunion. A tribute to previous generations who paved the way with integrity,” Claudine said.
Echoing that sentiment, Spencer also understands the importance of recognizing the talents and impact of the local African community.
“Events like this show people who are here. Roanoke is an incredibly diverse city,” Spencer said. “We have had more than 100 different nationalities here, which is why the Annual Local Colors Festival is so popular. In Roanoke alone, we have a substantial African population.”
She added, “When you see cultures from other places, it represents the people who are here. It’s your neighbors, your coworkers, your fellow parents. It breaks down misconceptions and fosters an appreciation.”
