This past weekend, Roanoke’s own Jamar “Chris” Dunn brought pride and glory to the community by capturing the title at the 2025 Virginia/North Carolina Golden Gloves Tournament. The event took place at the Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, MD on Friday, March 7, and Saturday, March 8.
Representing Champ’s Gym, a division of the Melrose Athletic Club, Inc., Dunn showcased his skill and determination throughout the tournament.
On Friday night, he secured a second-round TKO victory over Walter Johnson of Young Titans Gym, advancing to the finals in the 154-pound open division.
The excitement continued on Saturday night as Dunn faced off against Dontraeius Tatem of Team ILA Boxing Gym in the championship bout. Dominating all three rounds, Dunn earned a unanimous decision victory, officially claiming the title of Virginia/North Carolina 2025 Golden Gloves Champion. His stellar performance throughout the tournament also earned him the prestigious Most Outstanding Fighter of the Tournament award.
This victory is particularly sweet for Dunn, who was the runner-up in the 2024 Golden Gloves. His journey from last year’s disappointment to this year’s triumph is a testament to his relentless work ethic and the exceptional support system behind him.

Their unwavering commitment to developing local talent continues to yield impressive results.
Special recognition is also due to Junior Olympic State Champion Jamarion “Chucky” Henderson, who accompanied Dunn to the tournament, assisting in his preparation. Henderson is set to compete in the Virginia State Junior Olympics this coming May, and his dedication to both his training and his teammates speaks volumes about the spirit of Champ’s Gym.
