Who is Lex Brown and how would you describe yourself to someone who has never met you?
I’m someone who is always curious and loves connecting with people. I am big on family, staying active and learning new things.
Where were you born and raised? What was your upbringing like?
I was born in Wilmington, Delaware. When I was in the third grade, my family moved to Roanoke. I attended Westside Elementary, William Ruffner Middle and William Fleming High. At each stop, I made memories that I will forever cherish. I was fortunate to have both of my parents in the home. I vividly remember how awesome our summer trips and family gatherings were.
After high school, what was your next life chapter?
As the saying goes, “Life truly is an adventure.” I had numerous adventures that took me back to Delaware, then Seattle, Panama City, Florida, and Fort Worth, Texas, among other places.
What is your official title, and what do your responsibilities consist of?
I am a Registered Representative at NYLIFE Securities LLC. This basically means that I guide both individuals and business owners through financial decisions. I’m talking about everything from strategizing for retirement to ensuring that businesses have a secure future. I break down all the complex stuff before I focus on building trust.
How important is family to you?
Family is at the heart of who I am. I was lucky to be raised by two incredible parents, and they instilled in me the importance of staying close. That’s why relationships, whether in life or work, mean everything to me.
If you were building the ultimate music playlist for a six-hour road trip, which artists would be on it?
I listen to a lot of music, so my playlist would be rather extensive. Off the top of my head, Michael Jackson, The Roots, Lucky Daye, Teddy Swims, Luther Vandross, Kendrick Lamar, Drake and some old Kanye would certainly be on it.
What are some of your favorite City of Roanoke memories?
I loved the Strawberry Festival, and the Chili Cookoff when I was a kid. They were always fun. As was going swimming at Washington Park and Friday Night Football at Victory Stadium.
What are some of your hobbies?
Nowadays, my hobbies consist of enjoying good bourbon and cigars, going to listen to live music and, of course, making memories with the family.
Which people have had the biggest impact on your life outside of family?
Three individuals immediately come to mind – Coach George ‘Kila’ Miller, Coach Doug Depuy and Tom Fitpatrick, a teacher who had a profound impact on how I view the world.
If you could go back and give your younger self some advice, what would it be?
To not rush things. I would remind him that it’s ok to not have it all figured out. I would also say trust yourself, enjoy the journey and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. That is where you will grow the most.
