Who is Shavante Hughes?
I would describe myself as an outgoing individual who is funny, strong and possesses a great personality. I take tremendous pride in being the type of person who would give the shirt off his back to help those in need. The Christian background that I come from plays a huge role in my day-to-day interactions.
Where were you born and raised? What was your upbringing like?
I was born at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and raised in both the Star City and Franklin County. In Roanoke, I lived with my parents until high school when I moved in with my grandparents. They had a profound impact on my life at a time when I needed it the most. They showed and taught me right from wrong as well as the foundation of being a strong Black man. They also showed me that I can’t do anything without God.
After high school, what was the next chapter of your life?
I went to Virginia Western Community College for two years where I majored in Business Administration to be a budget accountant. I quickly discovered that ultimately, the profession just wasn’t for me so I changed my major to human services. Until four years ago, I worked at a boys’ group home. In 2021, I decided to bet on myself to become a professional drummer and travel the world doing what I love. I am so glad that I made that decision.
How did you end up becoming a drummer for the Eric Wayne Band?
One day, I was online and came across a social media post about them looking for a drummer. I reached out and shortly thereafter, an audition was set up for me. They sent a list of songs to perform. I quickly learned them, added my own style and the rest is history.
How important is family to you?
Family is everything to me. Without God and my family, I wouldn’t be anything. Family is the foundation of who I am and what I stand for. One day, I pray to have a family of my own so I can pass along the wisdom that my family has given me over the years.
If you were building the ultimate music playlist for a six-hour road trip, which artists would be on it?
That’s a tough one because I have so many artists I like. Certainly, on it would be Lettuce, 50 Cent, Morgan Wallen, Snoop Dogg, Michael Jackson, Drake, and, of course, the Eric Wayne Band. I’m definitely an old soul so I love old-school throwback music, especially from the 80’s.
How would you describe your relationship with the City of Roanoke?
Overall, I think Roanoke is a good city. I love my hometown, but there are some changes that I would love to see. I think that more can be done to combat crime and violence.
Outside of your profession, what do your hobbies consist of?
Drumming, watching docuseries at home, going to the movies, going to the gym, hiking, checking out different wineries, live music and bike riding.
Which people have had the biggest impact on your life outside of your family?
My bandmates – Eric, Derek and Tyler – have had the biggest impact thus far. More than just band members, these are my brothers. Delmar Parker, JoJo Stockton and Spencer Carter are some other individuals who have greatly influenced me too. Plenty of other people have made me a better person such as Dennis Chambers, Nate Smith, Larnell Lewis and Steve Jordan.
If you could go back and give your younger self some advice, what would it be?
To enjoy being young for as long as you can because adulthood isn’t for the weak. Also, to put more effort into my schooling and not clown around so much. Lastly, stay true to yourself no matter what.
