There is something to be said about a person who can host an event and seamlessly bring different factions of the community together. Now in its eighth year, Trish White-Boyd hosted her Annual Fish Fry Fundraiser on Aug. 30.
Held from 5 to 9 p.m. at Villa Heights, among the notable names in the large crowd were former State Senator John Edwards, Apple Ridge Farm Founder Peter Lewis and his wife Carla, and Lenai Clegg, owner and CEO of Culture Ethnic Shop, LLC.
Plates included fried fish, beans, cole slaw and greens. So good were the plates and homemade lemonade that Jay Smith placed multiple orders to take home. “If I’m going to spend that amount of money on food, it has to be delicious. Throw in the fact that it was to support Trish, and it was a no-brainer,” Smith said.
Throughout the event, various vendors were present, local musicians were given a platform to display their skills and pole fitness instructors showcased their athleticism, among other performers.
“I wasn’t surprised that the Roanoke community showed up in full force for Trish’s Annual Fish Fry Fundraiser,” LaQuisha Moore, known professionally as Ann Art, said. “Beyond just raising money, what I love about this event is how it brings everyone together and provides opportunities for others.”
White-Boyd is grateful for everyone who attended the event, especially the individuals who purchased multiple tickets. “More than anything, this event is all about community relations. Seeing so many people dancing with their neighbors and taking pictures of the talented performers made my heart smile. My son did a great job serving as event emcee,” she said.
She added, “When I was growing up, these types of gatherings were pretty regular. Some people drove for hours to be here, while others took a plane. As long as people keep supporting the fish fry, I will do everything in my power to keep it going.”
When asked what her favorite part was, Kayla Jones said seeing the young people and elders dance together. “Every time that I attend this event, I have a great time. This year was no exception,” Jones said. “Having attended multiple fish frys, I encourage everyone to experience this at least once.”
Many people said that when the fish fry comes around next year, they will be there in full force with family members and friends.
