Sunday (September 13) afternoon people enjoyed the OkraFest at Lick Run Farm on 10th Street. Urban farmer Cameron Terry opened the urban farm tour with a story about the first Okra festival where the weather suppressed turn out.
Eight years later the weather was beautiful and the farm bustled with fun activities. There was a cooking demonstration, a comedy Improv stage, a petting zoo, food booths and of course the star of the day, fresh okra for people to buy to take home.
Terry explained that the taste and quality of okra depended on its freshness. One woman enjoys eating okra raw. Okra was brought to North America by enslaved Africans bringing seeds with them on the boats in the 1600s.
The event was free and open to the public. Sponsors of the event included the Blue Ridge Soil and Water Conservation District, Virginia Association for Biological Farming and Edible Goose Creek.
