Alums of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) are known for their generosity and willingness to give back. On April 22, several current basketball players and future VCU graduates visited Roanoke’s Minnick School, a center of learning serving students with autism spectrum disorders and other disabilities, to give them a mini-Olympics experience that they will never forget.
Organizers say the event taught leadership, teamwork and other valuable life lessons. From start to finish, students were encouraged to chase greatness.
“Over the past couple of years, these games have been a tremendous success — not just as a competition — but as a way for our students to enjoy the thrill and satisfaction of physical activity,” Christina Feerick, Director of Communications and Marketing, said in a phone interview. “The kids were inspired by 67 role models and realized that with hard work, they also can succeed in the classroom and in life.”
It should come as no surprise that the day of joy and connection included some friendly competition. As the players signed autographs and took pictures, they also cheered on every shot attempt and layup made.
Just because one has autism doesn’t mean they cannot live a fulfilled, happy life. A deep emphasis was put on that sentiment throughout the event.
The partnership between Roanoke’s Minnick School on Dent Road and VCU began in 2021. Feerick, like everyone else involved, is excited to continue the collaboration in the future.
Since its inception, the school has fostered a supportive atmosphere that helps pupils get on track academically and navigate difficult situations.
“For many students, the path to school success gets lost due to challenging behaviors stemming from developmental delays, emotional disabilities and other impairments that result in school suspensions,” wrote the school on its website. “Minnick Schools offer exceptional programs and serve students between 5 and 22 with autism spectrum disorders, intellectual challenges and multiple disabilities.”
Arguably the second-best NCAA men’s basketball program in the Commonwealth since the turn of the century, VCU has been to the Sweet 16, Elite Eight and Final Four in that timespan.
Neither Longwood University, Old Dominion University, Norfolk State University, Radford University, the University of Richmond, Virginia Tech or William & Mary can claim such a feat.
Current head coach Phil Martelli Jr. is constructing a roster expected to make another tournament appearance.
When the 2026-27 season kicks off, Minnick School students and staff will be part of Ram Nation rooting VCU on.
