The City of Roanoke 911’s robust training program was recently reaccredited under the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International’s updated 2025 standards. Only 109 of approximately 5,000 emergency communication centers in the United States have earned this distinction.

This achievement marks the fifth time the City of Roanoke 911 has earned APCO International accreditation. However, this time the training program had to meet 100 new standards. APCO assessed Roanoke 911’s training curriculum to ensure it provides trainees with the required knowledge, decision-making abilities, and psychomotor skills outlined in the American National Standard.

“Our exceptional 911 staff answer over 700 calls a day,” said Toby Akers, Training Coordinator for the City of Roanoke 911. “Great training means that our communications officers are prepared to make critical decisions, support field responders, and provide reassurance during someone’s worst day.”

The extensive City of Roanoke 911 training program takes about a year to complete. In addition to efficiently dispatching emergency responders, this top-notch training has enabled Roanoke 911 communication officers to help deliver babies, provide lifesaving CPR instructions and assist in the safe escape of people trapped by fire.

“I am incredibly proud of our team for earning our fifth APCO Agency Training Program Accreditation. This milestone reflects our ongoing commitment to excellence in training, continuous improvement, and providing the highest level of service to our community,” said Sonya Roman, 911 Manager.
